Is there a difference is grout line thickness according to natural stone setters vs. tile setters? I believe they use a THINNNER grout line with natural stone. True or just personal choice? Thanks, Tom

 

Dear Tom :

Let’s start by saying that there are no official industry standards about that.

However, what I personally (and most others along with me) consider the best practice is to leave a 1/16” (3/32” maximum) grout gap with polished or hone-finished stone tiles. Sand less grout only should be used. (Butt-joint is a big no-no! You do need grout between the tiles and as deep in as possible.))

If you opt instead for a rustic look like the one that tumble-finished stone tiles will give you, then the grout gap grows to approx. 3/16” and sanded grout is required both for structural and aesthetic reasons.
