one piece of our kitchen countertop (out of 10) appears cloudy (the whole piece). Can this be fixed?

 

Dear Bob:

I have no idea.

It all depends on the reason why it is cloudy. Did perhaps your installer apply some impregnator (what you may know as sealer) to your stone thinking that’s granite? If that’s the case, then, maybe they did not remove the residue thoroughly form the surface of the stone before it had a chance to dry and you have now a dried-on film sitting on the surface of your stone.

It could also be a factory flaw, in which case, hopefully, a very proficient stone restoration contractor (if you’re lucky enough to find one that could pull a job like that) could improve it.

But it could also be a poor-grading slab, in which case there wouldn’t be any remedy.

Bottom line, unless it is my first assumption, your best bet is to consult with a reputable stone restoration contractor in your neck of the woods.

 

Now remember, it’s never too early to think about the proper maintenance of your stone. The issue of what you’ll be doing day in and day out to your stone is – as it should be intuitive – vastly more important than its sealing (if and when possible and/or advisable) and it’s all too often neglected. As you can tell by reading many of this site’s postings, you’re not likely to get good information about routine care from your dealer or installer. Don’t become another statistic!
