My husband and I are thinking of having Verde Uba Tuba granite (3 cm) counter tops installed in our kitchen. We have been told by several fabricators that we can have a 9 inch overhang on our island without supports underneath. One of them said it should be okay as long as we don't drop anything heavy "and I mean it would have to be a really heavy pan" on the overhang. We have 4 kids, 3 of them are boys that are between 5Ǝ" - 6ƈ" tall, each of them weighs more than any really heavy pan I have ever seen and I am concerned that leaning, laying on or sitting on this overhang will crack the stone. Would it be better to have a shorter overhang (6") or should we just avoid letting the kids into the kitchen?
Dear Priscilla:
9" overhang on a 3 cm. thick charnokite slab does not require any overhang, but... under the circumstances that you're reporting?...
You indicate as options to either keep the kids out of the kitchen, or go for a shorter overhang.
How about properly supporting the 9" overhang that you have in mind and get done with it?!... It is not technically needed by industry standards, but there's no law agaist it! :-)
Ciao and good luck,
Maurizio Bertoli
